Overview

What are dental crowns?

A crown is a custom-made cap that covers a tooth entirely, restoring its shape, strength and appearance. It is what you need when a tooth has too little structure left to hold a filling reliably.

The tooth is reduced slightly on all sides, scanned or impressed, and the crown made to fit precisely over what remains. It becomes the tooth's new outer surface, and it takes the bite force the weakened tooth can no longer take alone.

Suitability

Is it right for you?

You may need a crown if

  • Your tooth has had root canal treatment — particularly a back tooth
  • A large filling has failed, or there is more filling than tooth left
  • The tooth is cracked, chipped or worn down
  • You grind your teeth and have flattened them
  • You want to improve the shape or colour of a badly damaged tooth
  • You need an anchor for a bridge, or a restoration on an implant

Your other options

  • A large filling or an onlay, which conserve more tooth where enough structure remains
  • Extraction and an implant, where the tooth is too broken down to restore
  • Leaving it, which risks the tooth splitting — often past the point of saving

If one of these suits you better than dental crowns, we will say so at your consultation — including when the right answer is to do nothing for now.

Options

Crown materials we offer

  • Zirconia

Very strong and tooth-coloured. Our usual choice for back teeth and for patients who grind.

  • All-ceramic / E-max

The most natural-looking, with the best translucency. Ideal for front teeth.

  • Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM)

    A metal core under porcelain.

  • Full metal

The most durable and the kindest to the opposing tooth, but visibly metallic. Reserved for out-of-sight molars.

  • Same-day CAD/CAM

Milled in a single visit where the case allows — useful for patients travelling in from out of town.

Step by step

What actually happens

  1. Step 1: Assessment

    Visit 1

X-ray and examination to confirm a crown is the right answer, and that the tooth underneath is sound enough to carry one.

  2. Step 2: Preparation

    Visit 1

Under local anaesthetic, the tooth is reshaped to make room for the crown. This is irreversible — enamel does not grow back.

  3. Step 3: Scan and shade

    Visit 1

A digital scan is taken and the shade matched to your neighbouring teeth. A temporary crown goes on.

  4. Step 4: Manufacture

    1–2 weeks

The crown is made to fit your prepared tooth precisely.

  5. Step 5: Fitting

    Visit 2

We check the fit, contact points, shade and bite, adjust as needed, then cement it.

Benefits

Why it is worth doing

  • Holds a cracked or heavily filled tooth together and prevents it splitting

  • Restores full chewing function

  • Modern zirconia and ceramic match the neighbouring teeth closely

  • Protects a root-treated tooth, which is what makes that treatment last

  • Resists staining better than natural enamel

After treatment

Recovery, aftercare and risks

Recovery and aftercare

  • Avoid sticky and very hard food for 24 hours after cementing
  • Mild sensitivity to cold for a few days is normal
  • Floss carefully — pull the floss out sideways rather than snapping it up past a temporary
  • Keep the gum margin scrupulously clean; decay under a crown edge is the main reason crowns fail
  • Wear a night guard if you grind

What can go wrong

  • Preparation is irreversible — healthy tooth structure is removed and cannot be replaced
  • The tooth can become sensitive, and a small proportion later need root canal treatment because the nerve was closer than expected
  • Decay can develop at the margin where the crown meets the tooth, often unnoticed until it is advanced
  • Crowns can chip or come loose, particularly in patients who grind
  • PFM crowns can show a dark line at the gum as the gum recedes
  • A perfect shade match to adjacent natural teeth is not always achievable

Typically 10 to 15 years, and frequently longer with good hygiene. What ends a crown's life is usually not the crown — it is new decay at the margin, or fracture from grinding. Neither is inevitable.

The preparation is done under local anaesthetic, so you should feel pressure and vibration but not pain. Mild sensitivity to cold for a few days afterwards is normal and settles.

For a molar, zirconia — it takes heavy bite force and looks natural. For a front tooth, all-ceramic, which has the best translucency. PFM is the middle ground. Full metal is the most durable but only makes sense where nobody will see it. We will recommend based on the tooth.

We shade-match at the preparation visit and modern ceramics come very close. An exact match to a natural tooth is genuinely hard — enamel is translucent and varies in colour along its length. Single front crowns are the most demanding case, and we will tell you if a good result needs the neighbouring tooth treated too.

Not usually, but do not delay. Keep the crown, avoid chewing on that side, and call us — it can often be re-cemented if the underlying tooth is sound. Do not glue it back yourself.
