Overview

What are dental veneers?

A veneer is a thin shell — porcelain or composite — bonded to the front surface of a tooth. It changes the colour, shape, length and apparent alignment of the teeth appreciable when you smile.

It is a cosmetic treatment, not a functional one. Veneers mask problems rather than correcting them: they can make a slightly crooked tooth look straight, but they do not move it or change your bite.

Suitability

Is it right for you?

Veneers may suit you if,

  • Your front teeth are stained in a way whitening will not shift — Stains from Medication, Dental Fluorosis, an old discoloured filling
  • You have chipped, worn or uneven front teeth
  • You have small gaps that you would rather close cosmetically than with Braces
  • Your teeth are slightly crooked but your bite is well balanced
  • Your gums are healthy and you have no decay
  • You do not grind heavily

Your other options

  • Composite bonding, which is reversible and repairable
  • Orthodontics, which actually corrects alignment rather than masking it
  • Crowns, where the tooth is structurally damaged rather than just unattractive

If one of these suits you better than dental veneers, we will say so at your consultation — including when the right answer is to do nothing for now.

Options

Veneer options we offer

  • Porcelain veneers

    Lab-made, most natural-looking and stain-resistant. Takes two visits, and a long-lasting option.

  • Composite veneers

Built directly on the teeth in one visit.

  • Minimal-prep veneers

Very thin shells needing little or no enamel removal. Only suitable for some cases (only a Dentist can decide).

  • Digital smile design

Your proposed smile is designed and previewed digitally, and can be checked in your mouth as a mock-up before any tooth is touched.

Step by step

What actually happens

  1. Step 1: Smile consultation

    Visit 1

Photographs, a scan and a discussion of what changes you want. We design the proposal digitally and show it to you.

  2. Step 2: Mock-up

    Visit 1 or 2

The design is checked directly on your teeth so you can see and approve it before anything irreversible happens. We strongly recommend this step.

  3. Step 3: Preparation

    Visit 2

A thin layer of enamel is removed — usually less than half a millimetre — and a Digital scan is taken. Temporaries are fixed.

  4. Step 4: Manufacture

    1–2 weeks

Veneers are made and characterised to your approved design.

  5. Step 5: Bonding

    Visit 3

We check a trial, of the shade match and morphology with you, and only after approval, bond them permanently.

Benefits

Why is it worth getting done

  • Changes colour, shape and apparent alignment in a small number of visits

  • Porcelain resists staining better than natural enamel

  • Closes small gaps without orthodontic treatment

  • Digital design lets you approve the outcome before getting done

  • Composite options are reversible and repairable

After treatment

Recovery, aftercare and risks

Recovery and aftercare

  • Avoid biting nails, pens, thread or bottle caps — veneers chip on point loads
  • Do not use your front teeth to tear packaging
  • Wear a night guard if you grind, which is the main threat to veneers
  • Coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco will stain composite veneers and the natural teeth around porcelain ones
  • Brush and floss normally, and keep your six-monthly reviews

What can go wrong

  • Porcelain veneers are irreversible. Enamel is removed to make room, and once removed the tooth will always need a veneer or crown on it
  • Veneers chip and debond, especially in patients who grind
  • The underlying tooth can become sensitive, and occasionally needs root canal treatment later
  • They do not change colour. Whitening afterwards will not match them — whiten first, then match
  • Gum recession over the years can expose the veneer margin as a visible line
  • Composite stains and needs replacing sooner than porcelain

Dental Veneers — your questions

Porcelain veneers are not. We remove a thin layer of enamel to make room, and enamel does not grow back — that tooth will need a veneer or crown on it from then on. This is the single most important thing to understand before starting. Composite veneers and minimal-prep options are far more conservative.

Porcelain typically 10 to 15 years; composite 4 to 8. Grinding is what shortens both. When a porcelain veneer eventually fails it is replaced, not removed — the tooth underneath has been prepared for it.

Not if they are designed well. Natural teeth are not uniform, not perfectly white and not identical — veneers that ignore that read as obviously fake. We design to your face and age. If you want the very white uniform look, we can do it, but we will tell you honestly how it will read.

Yes. Veneers do not respond to whitening agents, so we match them to your teeth as they are on the day. If you whiten afterwards, your natural teeth will lighten and the veneers will not — leaving a mismatch. Whiten first, settle for two weeks, then shade-match.

If your teeth are genuinely misaligned, orthodontics corrects the problem; veneers hide it while removing healthy enamel. For mild irregularity with a sound bite, veneers are a reasonable cosmetic shortcut. For anything more, we will recommend aligners or braces instead.
