Overview

What is laser gum therapy?

Gum disease begins as gingivitis — red, puffy gums that bleed when you brush. At that stage it is fully reversible. Left alone it becomes periodontitis, where the bone anchoring the teeth is destroyed, and that damage does not come back.

Treatment removes the plaque and hardened tartar from below the gum line so the tissue can heal. A dental laser can be used alongside conventional scaling to decontaminate the pocket and reduce bleeding during treatment.

It is worth knowing that periodontitis is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults — ahead of decay — and most people have no pain until teeth start to loosen.

Suitability

Is it right for you?

You may need gum treatment if

  • Your gums bleed when you brush or floss — this is not normal, and it is the earliest sign
  • Your gums are red, swollen or tender
  • You have persistent bad breath or a bad taste
  • Your gums have receded and your teeth look longer
  • Teeth feel loose, or have started to drift apart
  • You are diabetic, or you smoke — both substantially raise your risk

Your other options

  • Improved home cleaning alone, which is enough for gingivitis but not for established periodontitis
  • Periodontal surgery, where deep pockets do not respond to non-surgical treatment
  • Extraction, for teeth with too little bone left to save
  • Doing nothing, which reliably ends in tooth loss

If one of these suits you better than laser gum therapy, we will say so at your consultation — including when the right answer is to do nothing for now.

Options

Gum treatments we offer

  • Scaling and polishing

Removes plaque and tartar above the gum line. For gingivitis this is often all that is needed.

  • Root planing (deep cleaning)

Cleans the root surfaces below the gum line under local anaesthetic. The core treatment for periodontitis.

  • Laser-assisted therapy

A dental laser decontaminates the pocket alongside scaling, with less bleeding during the procedure.

  • Laser gum contouring

Reshapes an uneven or gummy smile line, with minimal bleeding and quick healing.

  • Maintenance programme

Three to six monthly upkeep. This is not an upsell — it is what stops the disease returning.

Step by step

What actually happens

  1. Step 1: Periodontal assessment

    Visit 1

We measure the pocket depth around every tooth and X-ray the bone level. This gives an objective baseline to measure against.

  2. Step 2: Scaling

    Visit 1

Ultrasonic removal of tartar above and just below the gum line.

  3. Step 3: Root planing

    Visits 1–2

Under local anaesthetic, the root surfaces are cleaned within the pockets, often one quadrant at a time.

  4. Step 4: Laser decontamination

    Same session

Where indicated, the laser is used within the pocket after cleaning.

  5. Step 5: Review

    6–8 weeks

We re-measure the pockets. Healing is measurable, not a matter of opinion.

  6. Step 6: Maintenance

    Every 3–6 months

Ongoing upkeep, because periodontitis is controlled rather than cured.

Benefits

Why it is worth doing

  • Stops the bone loss that ultimately loosens teeth

  • Ends bleeding gums and the bad breath that comes with them

  • Saves teeth that would otherwise be lost

  • The laser reduces bleeding during treatment and can make it more comfortable

  • Gum health is linked to wider health — particularly diabetic control

Being straight with you

Recovery, aftercare and risks

Recovery and aftercare

  • Gums will be tender for a day or two and may bleed slightly
  • Warm salt-water rinses, but no vigorous swilling for 24 hours
  • Soft food for a day
  • Sensitivity to cold is common after deep cleaning as cleaned root surfaces are exposed — it settles over weeks
  • Brush gently but thoroughly and clean between the teeth every single day. This is the treatment; what we do in the chair only resets the clock
  • Stop smoking. Nothing else you do will matter as much
  • Keep your maintenance appointments

What can go wrong

  • Bone already lost does not grow back. Treatment stops the disease progressing; it does not reverse the damage
  • Gums often recede visibly after deep cleaning, because the swelling that was hiding the recession goes down. Teeth can look longer and gaps can open
  • Root sensitivity after treatment is common and can persist for weeks
  • Teeth already loosened may stay loose
  • Periodontitis relapses without maintenance and daily cleaning — this is a lifelong condition, not a one-off fix
  • Smokers and uncontrolled diabetics respond less well, and should know that upfront

Laser Gum Therapy — your questions

No. Healthy gums do not bleed, any more than healthy skin bleeds when you wash it. Bleeding is the earliest sign of gum inflammation and the point at which it is still completely reversible. Most people brush around the bleeding spot instead — which makes it worse.

The laser reduces bleeding during treatment and many patients find it more comfortable, but deep cleaning is still done under local anaesthetic. We will not describe it as painless. Expect tenderness for a day or two afterwards.

Honestly, no. Gum and bone lost to periodontitis do not regenerate on their own. Treatment halts the loss and lets the remaining tissue firm up and reattach. This is precisely why catching it at the bleeding-gums stage matters so much.

Because the swelling was hiding recession that had already happened. Inflamed gums are puffed up against the teeth; once they heal and shrink, the true gum level shows. It looks like the treatment caused it, but it revealed it. We warn everyone about this beforehand.

A persistent myth, and the reason a lot of gum disease goes untreated. Scaling removes tartar, not tooth. Where teeth feel looser afterwards, it is because hardened tartar was splinting teeth whose bone support had already gone — the tartar was hiding the problem, not solving it.
