Overview

What is teeth whitening?

Whitening uses a peroxide gel to break down the stain molecules that have built up within the tooth over years of coffee, tea, tobacco and time. It lightens the tooth's own colour rather than coating it.

Done professionally, the gum is protected, the concentration is controlled and the result is supervised. That is the difference between whitening and the unregulated kits sold online, which are the usual cause of the chemical gum burns we see.

Suitability

Is it right for you?

Whitening may suit you if

  • Your teeth have yellowed gradually with age, coffee, tea or tobacco
  • You have no untreated decay and healthy gums
  • You have no crowns or veneers on your front teeth — these will not lighten
  • You are not pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Your expectations are realistic — a few shades, not a colour swap

Your other options

  • A professional scale and polish, if the staining is on the surface — much simpler and sometimes all that is needed
  • Veneers, for staining that does not respond to bleaching
  • Composite bonding for individual discoloured teeth
  • Doing nothing — mildly yellow teeth are normal and healthy, and whiter is not the same as healthier

If one of these suits you better than teeth whitening, we will say so at your consultation — including when the right answer is to do nothing for now.

Options

Whitening options we offer

  • In-hospital whitening

A higher-concentration gel applied under supervision with the gums isolated. One visit, the fastest result.

  • Take-home kit

Custom trays and a lower-concentration gel used nightly for one to two weeks. Gentler, and easier to top up later.

  • Combination

An in-hospital session followed by trays to maintain and extend the result. Usually the most durable approach.

  • Internal bleaching

For a single dark tooth that has had root canal treatment — the gel goes inside the tooth, not on it.

Step by step

What actually happens

  1. Step 1: Check-up and shade record

    Visit 1

We confirm there is no decay or gum disease — whitening over either is genuinely painful — and record your starting shade so the change is measurable.

  2. Step 2: Cleaning

    Before whitening

A scale and polish first. Whitening over plaque and surface stain gives a patchy result.

  3. Step 3: Gum protection

    During

A barrier is placed over the gums. This is the step home kits skip, and the reason they cause burns.

  4. Step 4: Gel application

    60–90 minutes

The gel is applied in cycles, with the shade checked between each.

  5. Step 5: Review and maintenance

    After

We check the result and give you trays to maintain it if you want them.

Benefits

Why it is worth doing

  • A visible change in a single appointment

  • Supervised, so the gums are protected and the concentration is controlled

  • Custom trays fit properly, unlike one-size boil-and-bite kits

  • Sensitivity can be managed with desensitising gel before and after

  • Non-invasive — no enamel is removed

Being straight with you

Recovery, aftercare and risks

Recovery and aftercare

  • For 48 hours avoid anything that would stain a white shirt — coffee, tea, red wine, turmeric, beetroot, colas
  • Do not smoke during that window; it undoes the result faster than anything else
  • Use a desensitising toothpaste for the first week if teeth feel sharp
  • Use a straw for coloured drinks afterwards
  • Top up with your trays every 6–12 months rather than repeating the full in-hospital session

What can go wrong

  • Sensitivity to cold for 24 to 48 hours is common — usually mild, occasionally sharp
  • Gums can be irritated or chemically burned if the gel contacts them, which is why supervision matters
  • Results vary and cannot be predicted precisely. Grey and tetracycline staining responds poorly; yellow responds well
  • Crowns, veneers and fillings do not lighten — they will stay their original shade and can end up looking darker than the teeth around them
  • The effect is not permanent and fades over months to a couple of years
  • Over-whitening damages enamel and produces a flat, unnatural look

Questions

Teeth Whitening — your questions

Typically two to six shades on the standard scale, and yellow-toned teeth respond best. Grey tones and tetracycline staining respond poorly and may need veneers instead. We will assess your staining type at the consultation rather than promise you a number.

Professionally supervised whitening at controlled concentrations does not damage enamel — this is well established. What does cause damage is repeated over-use of unregulated high-concentration kits, and gel sitting on unprotected gums.

Six months to two years. It depends almost entirely on you — heavy coffee, tea and tobacco will pull the shade back within months. Topping up with take-home trays every six to twelve months is easier than repeating the in-hospital session.

No. Restorations do not respond to bleaching at all. If you have a crown or a composite filling on a front tooth, whitening the teeth around it will leave it looking darker by comparison — and matching it means replacing it. We will flag this before you start.

Many are not. The gum burns and severe sensitivity we treat almost always come from unregulated kits with uncontrolled concentrations and generic trays that let gel sit on the gums. Charcoal and baking-soda pastes are abrasive and scrub enamel away rather than whitening.
